Why is it that "cunt" is so verboten in America, but if you say it with a UK accent (e.g., "fooking coont"), it's fine?

Anyways, this goes into the history, etymology, and censorship of cunt, and can be informative. If even one person reads this site and decides that they're no longer offended by cunt, that would be great.
