Contact lens solution shipments stopped after tie to eye fungus

Bausch and Lomb says it has temporarily stopped shipping its ReNu contact lens solution because of links to eye infections.

Since June of last year, patients in 17 states have come down with a fungal infection that can cause temporary blindness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been investigating 109 reports of the eye fungus Fusarium keratitis. Health officials interviewed just 30 of those patients, but 26 reported using the ReNu brand or a generic type of solution also made by Bausch and Lomb.

Doctor Ben Teller, who is the president of the Optometric Society of Washington, says he's telling patients to switch to a different solution. Teller also says some research suggests all-in-one solutions in general might not be up to the task of cleaning lenses properly.
