Parenting 101

A 5-year-old boy was in stable condition after he was accidentally shot in the left arm by his 3-year-old brother, police said.

The brothers may have been wrestling for the gun when it went off Saturday at their home, police said.

Sgt. Kenny Rider said detectives found a spent .22 caliber shell on a bed.

The gun belongs to the boy's father, Clint Miller, 28, who was not home at the time, police said. The mother, Jessica Goodman, 23, was in the backyard, police said.

The boys' names were not released.

Police said a restraining order filed against Miller prohibits him from possessing weapons.

It was unclear how the boys found the gun. Police said they were told both that it was in a closet and that it was on a dresser.

Being a parent should be a privilege, not a right. If we regulated who could parent children based on simple comprehension, psychological screening, and other factors, the world would instantly become a better place. This sounds so extreme, I know, but if the crack whores, white trash, and moronically inclined didn't raise their own children, they might stop having children. And then the intelligence of our society would improve a hundredfold.

PS. Let me be clear. I don't think that people having children at a young age automatically makes them bad parents. I think that many young adults have the intelligence and maturity to raise their brats correctly.

I've always advocted testing and licensing people before they become parents. Although I think the gun issue can be resolved with a little reverse psychology. Leave the loaded guns out in the open and lock up a plate of fresh brocoli in the gun safe, then tell the kiddies "If I catch you getting into my brocoli, there'll be hell to pay! Go play with the gun."
